Sakapatú

Biography

Sakapatú was formed by a group of Peruvian and Chilean musicians in Barcelona, Spain, at the beginning of 2004. The ensemble stands out due to their suprising productions which combine modern and traditional instruments to create the music of their roots, their repertoire is inspired by traditional music from different periods and origins. The band bases a large part of its repertoire on Afro Peruvian music, seldom heard internationally. This genre of music goes back to the times of slavery, when Africans were taken to Peru. To express themselves the slaves improvised instruments with materials they had to hand. This is how wooden crates used to transport merchandise became the “Peruvian Cajon”, an instrument which, along with “la cajita” (the little box) and the “Quijada de burro” (the donkey's jaw), made this style of music, and it's wealth of rhythms, somewhat unique. It is rare to see instruments from such humble origins be used to such effect. Sakapatú combines these African rhythms with an air of Andean folklore using ancient cane wind instruments such as quenas (reed flutes) and zampoñas (panpipes). It was perhaps Sakapatú's special way of performing and living the music which led them to be chosen to participate in Barcelona's "IX World Music Festival" in October 2004. Their success in such a prestigious festival gave the group the opportunity to perform more than 300 concerts throughout Spain between 2005 and 2009 with their educational show "Sakapatú: A journey through Andean music” Currently completing their fourth national tour, Sakapatú recently finished the recording of their first album, recorded and mixed at Studio Laietana of Barcelona, and masterized by Ryan Smith at Sterling Studio of New York (release date to be arranged). The impressive and intimate experience of the group's live performances is skillfully captured in their first LP: For those who have seen or listened to the group, there is no doubt that Sakapatú will become one of the most welcome suprises on the World Music scene. sakapatú son: CRISTIAN ESCÁRATE: bajo fretless, charango y voz DIEGO "El Cachorro" HIDALGO: cajón peruano, congas y percusión ERKKI NYLUND: guitarra, charango, cuatro venezolano, tiple, quenas y voz WILLIAM ARAVENA: zampoñas, quenas, clarinete, percusión y voz DIEGO ABARCA: tiple colombiano, guitarra y voz CESAR TORO: zampoñas, quenas, travesera, percusión y voz GADDAFI NUÑEZ: percusión afroperuana, guitarra y voz Read more on Last.fm.
