Llibert Fortuny

Biography

Catalan alto sax player Llibert Fortuny (pronounced Leebairt Fortoon) was in fact born in the Canary Islands in 1977, as his parents had moved there to work. He started playing the sax when he was 11 after studying music, piano and guitar from age 7. In 1997, he graduated from the Conservatory in Manresa (60 km. – 35 miles NW of Barcelona) and received a scholarship to continue his studies at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Mass. In the States, he soon came to play with the likes of Chick Corea, the Greg Hopkins Band, the Ryles Club Big Band, and others. He graduated from Berklee with a Suma Cum Laude in May, 2001. He then returned to Catalonia, where he started the Llibert Fortuny Quartet in Barcelona with Albert Bover (piano), David Mengual (double bass), and Marc Miralta (drums). They went on to play throughout Spain, and recorded ‘Un circ sense lleons’ (A Circus without Lions) along with Spanish sax player Perico Sambeat on the Nuevos Medios label in 2004. His next project was ‘Revolts’ (‘Bends’), in which he turned from acoustic to electric Jazz with a quintet: Llibert Fortuny (alto sax), David Soler (guitars, pedal steel guitar, dobro, sampler), David Mengual (electric bass), Dani Domínguez (drums), and Quim Puigtió (sound hacking). After Revolts in 2006 comes the ‘XXL’ live album with his Llibert Fortuny Electric Big Band (Llibert Fortuny: alto sax; David Soler: electric and pedal steel guitars; Dani Dominguez: drums; David González: bass; Quim Puigtió: sound hacking). Currently, Llibert is touring/recording as triphasic alongside gary willis and david gomez.
