El Potito

Biography

Born Antonio Vargas Cortés in Sevilla in 1976, El Potito is a male flamenco singer. El Potito was a child prodigy: he recorded his first record, produced by Pepe de Lucía, when he was fourteen. This precociousness is not surprising if you take into account the precedents in his family: he is the son of Changuito, a cantaor, bailaor and guitarist, and the nephew of the bailaora and cantaora Angelita Vargas. His manner of singing, his voice and his high-pitch treble inevitably led to him being considered Camaron´s heir in his beginnings. El Potito masters rhytmic palos (forms) especially well, the tangos, tanguillos, alegrías, rumba... but he is particularly outstanding in a bulería style, in which his renditions are masterful. In spite of his youth, the number of records that he has released and the quality that he has achieved within them are noteworthy, as are the guitarists with whom he has worked: Vicente Amigo, Paco de Lucía, Tomatito, Enrique de Melchor, Rafael Riqueni... He has also made important contributions to the so-called mixed-breed flamenco and new flamenco, a style in which he has worked with Jorge Pardo and Ketama. Read more on Last.fm.
