Dorian Wood

Biography

Dorian Wood's rich, haunting melodies and deeply personal tales of heartbreak and working-class fury are elevated by his spiralling warble/wail/battle cry, echoing the raw, early days of Odetta, Tom Waits, Nick Cave and Bryan Ferry. A native of Echo Park, California, Dorian Wood began his career by performing his first piano recital at the age of 5. He received his lessons from his grandfather, a pianist and composer. After graduating from the Conservatorio de Castella in Costa Rica, Wood spent four semesters at the Los Angeles City College Film School, before dropping out. Dorian began experimenting with music, and focused on recording hours of 'lo-fi experimental folk ditties' on tape and CD-R format. In 2001, Wood produced his first album was a ten-track lo-fi love compilation entitled "Rekinbol". Wood soon formed The Dorian Wood Guilt Trip with guitarist Dan Kozak, and together they released a self-titled EP in 2003. They also recorded a cover of Malvina Reynolds' "Little Boxes" for the compilation disc, "Don't Know When I'll Be Back Again".In 2004, Wood became a part of the semi-improvisational gospel choir known as The Northern Embers as vocalist and pianist. In 2005, Wood returned to solo work by recording the main tracks for "Bolka" in Nashville, under the production supervision of Rebecca Stout, which his website describes as "epic sweeps of psyche-folk-country-soul" "bringing to life ... Dorian's ugliest fears, mostly surrounding the aftermath of his break-up." Read more on Last.fm.
