Biography

ANNA PHOEBE is a violinist and composer working on cross-genre solo and collaborative projects, a broadcaster with a show on Soho Radio, and a Board Director at the Ivors Academy. Anna’s latest commissions have come from the European Space Agency, writing music to Earth Observation Data tracking the climate crisis; and the University of Kent in association with Cancer Research UK, for whom she composed a choral–orchestral work in response to cancer and dementia research. Anna’s latest album Sea Souls is a rich musical palette inspired by the natural world, exploring the dialogue between the sea and inner psyche. It has received widespread radio support, including from Scala Radio, BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio 6 Music, Soho Radio, BBC Radio London, and KEXP. Her instrumental duo AVAWAVES is signed to One Little Independent Records (home to Björk and Skunk Anansie), releasing its second album Chrysalis in October 2021. They recently scored the feature documentary Savage Waters (dir. Mikey Corker). Together with artist and producer Richard Bundy, Anna has co-founded the cross-disciplinary project Cantium Arts in collaboration with Dover Arts Development and Arts Council England. They hosted a performance and installation on 10 December 2021 at a former prison and refugee detention centre in Dover and are expanding the project to produce a full length album recorded in Heritage Sites across Dover. Anna recently scored and produced the music for Almost Invisible Angels with Sam Lee (vocals and shruti), a collaboration with Jay Griffiths and Writers Rebel that was narrated by Mark Rylance. As a composer for screen, Anna won Best Composer at BAFTA-affiliated Underwire Film Festival for her score for Belittled (feat. Kiran Sonia Sawar; dir. Claire Tailyour) and was nominated for Best Composer for Harriet and the Matches (feat. Cillian Murphy; dir. Miranda Howard-Williams). Other composer credits include Ethel (feat. Miriam Margolyes, Elijah Baker, Professor Green; dir. Jonathan Wright). She has also recently composed music for the award-winning ten-part audiobook series The Effect for Audible, as well as the BBC Radio 4 drama Barred. Anna has co-written with Ivor Novello Lifetime Achievement recipient Nitin Sawhney CBE, for his album Immigrants, released in March 2021 on Sony Masterworks; and she recorded with legendary musician and TV personality Jools Holland for his solo album Pianola: Piano and Friends on Warner Music. Anna is also a broadcaster, presenting the monthly show ‘Between Sea & Sky’ on Soho Radio. She features in Yasmin Alibhai-Brown's book Ladies Who Punch. Read more on Last.fm.
