Biography

Albert Bover was born in Barcelona in 1964. He started to study music theory, solfege and classical piano at the Center of Musical Studies of Barcelona, at the Music School with Albert Giménez and at the Angel Soler Studio. Nowadays he studies classical piano with Sophia Rosoff. He has studied Jazz at the "Aula de Música Moderna", and has taken private lessons with Alvaro Is (1984-1986). Afterwards he moved to a New York, to study at the New School University , where he took lessons with Fred Hersch, Kenny Barron, Barry Harris, Sal Mosca and Jackie Byard (1989-1991). His professional career starts with the group A-free-k and Jack Walrath, performing at the Jazz festivals of Madrid, Barcelona and Terrassa (1986-1987). He was member of the groups "Azúcar Imaginario" and Box Office" (1987-1990). Later he joints the Perico Sambeat Quartet, recording two CD ́ s. With the Eladio Reinón Group he performed at the Jazz Festivals of Copenhague and Aarhus(Denmark). With José Luis Gámez Group, he went to the Leverkusen Jazz Festival (Germany). He has been playing as a sideman with great jazz stars in their tours in Festivals or Jazz Clubs in Spain like Art Farmer, Harold Land, Ed Thigpen, Eddie Henderson, Seamus Blake, Jesse Davis, Ralph Moore, Dick Oatts, Donald Harrison, Eddie Marshall, Sonny Fortune,Ken Peplowski, Sheila Jordan, Idris Muhammad, Antoine Rooney, Scott Hamilton, Bennie Green, Jery Brown, Kenny Wheeler, Walter Norris, Gary Willis, Randy Brecker, Al Foster, Dave Schnitter, Mark Turner, Benny Golson, Mike Kaupa, Bob Stoloff, Alvin Queen, Ray Drumond, Harry Allen and Jerry González. He has been playing more recently in duet or in other ensembles with national musicians like Chano Domínguez, Albert Sanz, Javier Colina, Guillermo Mcgill, Chris Kase, Marc Miralta, Andrejz Olejniczak, Bob Sands, Llibert Fortuny, Raynald Colom, Dani Pérez and Martí Serra. He has played also with european musicians like Carlos Barreto, Anthony Kerr, François Theberge, Julian Arguelles, Peter King, Gerard Presencer, Michael Nielsen, Alan Skidmore, Jean Toussaint, Deborah Brown, Louis Stewart, Stephen Keogh and Vasco Agostinho. He has played in Festivals and Jazzclubs in Portugal, France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Romania, Morocco, Germany, Italy, Greece, Poland and Andorra. At the moment he plays in trio with Masa Kamaguchi on acoustic bass, and David Xirgu on drums. He is also member of the following groups: Gorka Benítez, Vicente Espí Quartet y Julian Vaughn "Visions". He plays in duet with Horacio Fumero. He has collaborate with flamenco musicians like Chicuelo at the shows of Shoji Kojima in Tokio, Kurashiki and Okegawa (Japan) and with Miguel Poveda. He has collaborate also in a fusion project with musicians of Andalusí music like Dris Al-Maloumi in "Connexió Argan". He has recorded as a lider: Esmuc blues (2004), Old bottle, new wine (1999), Albert Bover trio Live in Jamboree (1998) and as a coleader: Caminhos cruzados(2008) and Albert Bover-Horacio Fumero Duo (1997). As a sideman he has recorded with Amelia Bernet, Gorka Benítez, Bruce Arkin, Pirineos Jazz Orchestra y Randy Brecker, Miguel Angel Chastang featuring Al Foster, Julian Vaughn, Vicente Espí Quartet, Horacio Fumero, Llibert Fortuny, Chris Kase, Xavi Maureta, Chicuelo, Iñaki Askunze, Alfons Enjuanes, Andrejz Olejniczak, Anthony Kerr, Bob Sands, Iruña Big Band, Carlos Barreto, Antonio Mesa, Victor de Diego, José Luis Gámez, Arturo Serra, Perico Sambeat , and A-free- K + Jack Walrath. He has received the Price of the Musicians Associaciation of Jazz of Catalonia to the best pianist of 2002, the Price Altaveu for his CD Esmuc blues, and the Youth Price of the Cultural Association of Music and Jazz San Juan Evangelista among others. He wrote part of the soundtrack of the film "Tren de sombras" of José Luis Guerín (1996). He was musical director of the TV program Paral.lel at Chanel Canal 33 (1998-1999), and at the SGAE Composition Competition of the SGAE in 1993 and 1994. He has been a professor at the Music University of Catalonia (ESMUC) since 2002. He has taught in Jazz Workshops in Spain and Europe. Formerly he taught at the Music University of the Basque Country(Musikene), and at the annual meeting of the International Association of Schools of Jazz(IASJ) at Cologne, Germany (1998) and at the "Taller de Músics" (1986-1991).
